Restoration of Citizenship

Purpose
This following outlines the procedure for former citizens of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago by birth or by descent who (prior to July 29th, 1988) lost Trinidad & Tobago citizenship by acquiring citizenship of another country. Upon approval, citizenship will be restored retroactively to the date of loss.

Who can apply for restoration of citizenship?
All former citizens of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago by birth or by descent who prior to July 29th 1988 lost citizenship of Trinidad and Tobago by acquiring citizenship of another country and who would like to have their Trinidad and Tobago citizenship restored.

Note 1. A person who acquired Canadian or other citizenship after July 29th, 1988 does not have to apply for Restoration

Note 2. A person who acquired Canadian or other citizenship through an involuntary act, under the age of 18 does not have to apply for Restoration

Where can I get an application form?
Application forms are available online at www.ttcgtoronto.gov.tt.  An application form can also be obtained  by visiting one of the offices below or by sending a pre-paid CDN$1.08, self addressed return envelope to:

Fees

  • A non-refundable processing fee of CDN$8.00
  • A fee of CDN$15.00 for notarisations being done at the Consulate General
  • A Certificate Fee of CDN$81.00 payable upon approval of the application

Please note that all fees must be made payable via money order or certified cheque to the
"Consulate
General for Trinidad & Tobago".

What documents should I submit?

The applicant must provide:

  • Three (3) original completed application forms (Form 16). These forms must be signed in the presence of a Notary Public or Commissioner of Affidavits or Commissioner of Oaths or Justice of the Peace who would then affix his/her signature and seal in the space provided on the application form.
  • Four (4) recent identical passport-size photographs measuring 35mm x 45mm (one of which must be certified at the back by the official listed in 1 above who signs the forms, to the effect that the photograph is a true likeness of the applicant.) The seal of this official should NOT be placed on the photograph
  • Please refer to the section above for all relevant Fees

The original and three (3) coloured photocopies of all documents listed hereunder:

  • A Police Certificate of Character for immigration purposes
  • Medical forms (P&I 40 &40A). Please note that 40A must be completed by a registered medical officer and accompanied by the results and report of a chest X-ray
  • Original Trinidad and Tobago Birth Certificate (supported by an affidavit, if full name does not appear on birth certificate or if the name is spelt incorrectly)
  • Canadian or other citizenship certificate indicating full date of acquisition, before July 29th, 1988. (Citizenship Card will not be accepted)
  • Trinidad and Tobago Passport, if available
  • Photocopy of present national passport (i.e. Canadian or other, if available)
  • A registered marriage certificatefrom the Registrar's Office (for married women) and a divorce decree if divorced. In cases of multiple marriages, relevant documents must be produced for each marriage.
  • Documentary evidence such as a Provincial Change of Name Certificate or a Deed Poll from Trinidad and Tobago if name has been changed other than by marriage

Please note if any of the required documents or copies are missing the application will be returned to you.

How do I submit my application?
Applications can be submitted in person or via mail, if the applicant is out of province.

Do I need to attend an interview?
A person submitting an application MUST make a prior appointment to see the Consul (Immigration) at the Consulate General in Toronto.

N.B. All copies must be provided by the applicant at time of application.
